How does LASIK work?
LASIK—laser assisted in situ keratomileusis—is an eye surgery in which a laser is used to reshape the front of the eye to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a flap is created with the Zeimer Laser with the very top—epithelial—layer of the cornea. Once the flap is folded back, the computerized Allegretto laser is used to very specifically and gently sculpt the curvature of the cornea, retaining the natural prolate shape of the eye's surface. Once the precisely calculated amount of tissue is removed, the flap is replaced over the cornea without the need of stitches.
