The LASIK Experience
Once one of our experienced doctors has decided a patient is an ideal candidate for LASIK vision correction surgery, they will give the patient specific instructions to follow before and after surgery. It is important to follow these instructions exactly, as noncompliance can affect the results or complicate the healing process. Throughout the process, our LASIK surgeons are available to answer questions and concerns regarding the LASIK surgery. If you are interested in LASIK vision correction surgery, contact Vision Care Specialists in Denver, Aurora, Highlands Ranch, and Lakewood.
Prior to undergoing LASIK vision correction surgery, you will receive a thorough eye examination and review your medical history with one of our LASIK surgeons. During your eye examination, we will assess the stability of your vision and test your eyes from glaucoma and other conditions. We will also measure your eyes, corneas, pupils, and map your cornea to determine the amount of correction needed. From this information, we will determine your refractive prescription.
Once it is determined that you are a candidate for LASIK, you will be advised to stop wearing contact lenses for up to two weeks prior to the procedure. This is so we can measure your eye and cornea accurately, helping to ensure the effectiveness of the procedure.
LASIK surgery entails a 10 minute, in-office procedure. After your eyes have been numbed with anesthetic eye drops, our surgeon will use the Ziemer laser to create a flap in the top layer of the cornea. The flap is pulled back and a computer-controlled laser begins to adjust the curvature of the cornea by removing tissue. Once the appropriate amount of tissue has been removed, our surgeon will replace the flap, returning it to its original position. To ensure that the flap will remain in place and heal correctly, the surgeon may observe the eye for a few minutes.
Though you may be able to notice an immediate improvement in your vision, it is not safe for you to drive yourself home from our office. Instead, make arrangements for a family member or friend to drive you. Since you may feel some discomfort after the surgery, our surgeon may prescribe pain medication if you need it as well as eye drops. Do not rub your eyes, as doing so may dislodge the flap and cause complications to your healing process and results.
You should plan to return to VCS to have your surgeon check on the healing process and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment several times including the next day, ten days later, and at one month, two months, and six months.
The surgeons at Vision Care Specialists have the experience to make your LASIK vision correction surgery safe and effective. Contact our offices in Denver, Lakewood, Highlands Ranch, and Aurora to schedule an appointment.
