A fabulous adventure to take after your Colorado eye care appointment at Vision Care Specialists is the free tour of the U.S. Denver Mint. Learn about and witness the operation that produces more than 50 million coins per day for the U.S. Treasury.
A Look Back
Even though coining operations didn’t start in Denver until 1906 the U.S. Mint was established here in 1863 largely in response to Colorado’s gold rush which began in 1858. For its first 46 years, it operated as an assay office where miners brought in their gold dust and nuggets to be melted, assayed and cast into bars. It was a booming operation back in 1895 and brought in more than $5.6 million in gold and silver deposits.
When Congress decided to make the U.S. Mint a coining operation, the facility moved to 320 W. Colfax Avenue—its current location—an Italian Renaissance-style building modeled after the Riccardi Palace in Florence, Italy. In its first year, the Denver Mint coined more than 1.6 million coins. Today, it has the capacity to mint more than 50 million.
Public tours give you insight into this beautiful structure, one of Colorado’s oldest institutions and the building that’s on the National Register and the Denver Register of Historic Places. On the tour, visitors get to see the coin-making process, artifacts from the Mint’s past and special exhibits—all for free.
