Seeing Denver: Farmers Markets – A Feast for the Senses

Farmers Markets are a wonderful way to be part of your community, support local food vendors, and enjoy the outdoors, and thankfully Denver scores high marks in all three of those categories. There are a variety of markets to choose from throughout the city and surrounding communities with one to choose from every day of the week from June through October. So if you want to soak in a great atmosphere and bring home some healthy, tasty treats, now’s the time to attend one of these wonderful outdoor markets.

The Cherry Creek Fresh Market is Denver’s top choice, attracting big, vibrant crowds every Summer Saturday from 8am to 1pm (and Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm). This bustling, outdoor market right next to Cherry Creek’s shopping district offers great foods—from ingredients like fresh meat and produce to snacks like tamales and kettle corn—at great prices, all from Colorado farmers and small business owners. With unforgettable tastes at an unbeatable location, this market redefines “local flavor.”

The City Park Esplanade Fresh Market is the place to go if you slept through the Cherry Creek Market—all the same vendors, just a day later. Head to the lush City Park in the heart of downtown Denver on Sundays from 9am to 1pm to pick up some delicious food, then find a nice patch of grass nearby for an instant picnic!

Another market is going on at the exact same hours at the City Park Esplanade: the Old South Pearl Street Farmers Market. Located on Denver’s traditional but trendy Pearl Street, this market offers super-fresh food and ingredients and an addictive community atmosphere. Attend its “Nibble at Noon” cooking demonstrations by professional chefs for ideas on what to do with your new ingredients.

But the shopping doesn’t end when summer does; make it to the Mile High Flea Market, Colorado’s only year-round outdoor farmer’s market. Open from 7am to 5pm every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday year-round, this market offers food stalls, shops, and kids’ rides. Check their concert calendar to make it there on a day with live music!

If the weather turns unfriendly, have no fear; turn to Denver Urban Homesteading and Farmers Market. Denver’s only indoor market, its managers personally visit every local farm that sells their food at this downtown location, verifying its agricultural, nutritional, and environmental integrity. Open year-round, this farmer’s market is distinct not only in its protection from the elements, but also in its acceptance of credit cards.

Not looking to come into the city, never fear, there are also plenty of great farmers markets nearby.  Below are just a few of the great suburban markets available:
